English Wikipedia to be Blacked Out To Protest SOPA and PIPA

I was surprised as I read this messages on top of Wikipedia's site. It says that, "Please note: in less than 8 hours, the English Wikipedia will be blacked out globally to protest SOPA and PIPA". This simply means that starting January 18, 2012, Wikipedia in English will be unavailable for 24 hours. I believed a lot of people especially the students and even myself will be very sad about this. I love this site and it is like my encyclopedia.

End of The World

Is the world really ending? With all the natural calamities that are happenings in some parts of the world now, some people are saying that it is already the end of the world. It is more than two months now since I watched live over the television the earthquake in Fukushima, Japan last March 11, 2011. It looked like I was watching a film that time but it is true. I believed it is just a reminder that what we do to our Mother Nature always boomerangs to us. Let's start caring for our Mother Earth! It's not yet too late.

Here is another news I read about Doomsday online.

When Doomsday Isn't, Believers Struggle to Cope

If you're reading this, Harold Camping's predictions that the end of the world would start Saturday (May 21) failed to pan out.

That's good news for most of us, but Camping and his followers were looking forward to the end. After all, they believed that they were likely to be among the 200 million souls sent to live in paradise forever. So how do believers cope when their doomsday predictions fail?

It depends, said Lorenzo DiTommaso, a professor of religion at Concordia University in Montreal who studies the history of doomsday predictions.

"If you have a strong leader, the group survives," DiTommaso told LiveScience. "Sometimes the group falls apart. Most often, the answer given by the group is that the prophecy is true, but the interpretation was wrong."

Japan official: Disasters overwhelmed government

TOKYO – The Japanese government acknowledged Friday that it was overwhelmed by the scale of last week's twin natural disasters, slowing the response to the nuclear crisis that was triggered by the earthquake and tsunami that left at least 10,000 people dead.

The admission came as Japan welcomed U.S. help in stabilizing its overheated, radiation-leaking nuclear complex, and reclassified the rating of the nuclear accident from Level 4 to Level 5 on a seven-level international scale, putting it on a par with the 1979 Three Mile Island accident.

At least 443 dead after flooding in Brazil

According to Reuters, at least 443 are dead after massive flooding and mudslides in Brazil, after heavy rain in the rocky in the Serrana region. msnbc.com has reported that the death toll stands at almost 500. The area, located north of Rio de Janeiro, received 10 inches of rain (a month’s worth) in 24 hours.

The Folha de São Paulo publication stated it was the worst natural disaster to impact Brazil in about forty years. During a 5 mile hike for supplies, local resident Vania Ramos said, “I don’t even have the words to describe what I’ve seen.” According to the Civil Defense agency, in excess of 13,500 people have become homeless due to the recent events.

Debris from destroyed houses is littered across the area; more rain and mudslides are expected. Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff flew over the area by helicopter. To the region, the country's health ministry is sending seven thousand kilograms of medication. Teresopolis area mayor Jorge Mario said, “It’s like an earthquake struck some areas.”

Facebook in Privacy Breach

Top-Ranked Applications Transmit Personal IDs, a Journal Investigation Finds

Many of the most popular applications, or "apps," on the social-networking site Facebook Inc. have been transmitting identifying information—in effect, providing access to people's names and, in some cases, their friends' names—to dozens of advertising and Internet tracking companies, a Wall Street Journal investigation has found.

The issue affects tens of millions of Facebook app users, including people who set their profiles to Facebook's strictest privacy settings. The practice breaks Facebook's rules, and renews questions about its ability to keep identifiable information about its users' activities secure.

Nobel Peace Prize 2010

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2010 to Liu Xiaobo for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has long believed that there is a close connection between human rights and peace. Such rights are a prerequisite for the "fraternity between nations" of which Alfred Nobel wrote in his will.

Over the past decades, China has achieved economic advances to which history can hardly show any equal. The country now has the world's second largest economy; hundreds of millions of people have been lifted out of poverty. Scope for political participation has also broadened.

China's new status must entail increased responsibility. China is in breach of several international agreements to which it is a signatory, as well as of its own provisions concerning political rights. Article 35 of China's constitution lays down that "Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession and of demonstration". In practice, these freedoms have proved to be distinctly curtailed for China's citizens.

Fossil Skeletons May Be Human Ancestor

A newfound ancient relative of humanity discovered in a cave in Africa is a strong candidate for the immediate ancestor to the human lineage, an international team of scientists said today.

The remarkably well-preserved skeletons - a juvenile male and an adult female that lived nearly 2 million years ago - were found near the surface in the remains of a deeply eroded limestone cave system.

Scientists don't know how they died, but it's possible they fell into the cave.

The hominids had longer arms than we do, and smaller brains. But their faces were human-like, and scientists say the discovery represents an important look into our pre-human past. Researchers stopped short of calling the new species, dubbed Australopithecus sediba, a missing link.

Google and Facebook Banned in China

The other weekend, I had a chat with a friend in Shanghai, China through yahoo messenger. We talked about her work there and some personal topics. I also asked her how is the living in Shanghai, China. She told me that she loves Shanghai and she is doing good over there. Her employer are also good. I asked her if she has a facebook account. I was greatly surprised when she told me that Google.com and Facebook are banned in China. I remember what she told as I read the daily German newspaper, Neumarkter Tagblatt this morning. One article today also mentioned that China don't only banned Google but Twitter, Youtube, Flickr, Technorati and other websites. I want to research later what are the inaccessible websites in China. if I am not mistaken these sites are not blocked in Hongkong and Macau where they have their own legal system. This is quite interesting. More updates to come about this.

Maxi Sopo Caught in Facebook

Do you know Maxi Sopo? If not continue reading below.

"Maxi Sopo was living the dream of a fugitive abroad, kicking back on the beaches of Cancun by day, partying in the clubs by night.

Then he did two things that are never a good idea when you're on the run from authorities: He started posting Facebook updates about how much fun he was having - and added a former Justice Department official to his list of friends.

That kind of recklessness landed the 26-year-old native of Cameroon in a Mexico City jail, where he is awaiting extradition to the United States on bank fraud charges. Federal prosecutors say he and an associate falsely obtained more than $200,000 from Seattle-area banks and credit unions.

"He was making posts about how beautiful life is and how he was having a good time with his buddies," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Scoville, who helped find Sopo. "He was definitely not living the way we wanted him to be living, given the charges he was facing."

Even in the hold-nothing-back world of social networking, where police search Facebook photos for evidence of underage drinking and watch YouTube videos to identify riot suspects, it's rare that a fugitive helps authorities this much.

In status updates, Sopo said he was "loving it" and "living in paradise."

"LIFE IS VERY SIMPLE REALLY!!!!" he wrote on June 21. "BUT SOME OF US HUMANS MAKE A MESS OF IT...REMEMBER AM JUST HERE TO HAVE FUN PARTEEEEEEE." read more here

Selling Grandma in Internet

I just happened to read this awhile ago in internet. A ten year old girl from England put her grandma in auction in eBay. She want to do that only for fun and her grandma knew of what she did but eBay won't approved it because it is forbidden and against the law of slave trading.

I also read that last January there is a lady from California who want to put her virginity in auction and the auction even reach $3.7 million. There was also a 33 year-old mother last 2007 who put her two daughters into auction in internet. These are also forbidden. I don't understand the world now. But anyway this is only for general information. I wish you all a great start of the month of October.

Updates About Swine Flu

This is a subscribed email from arcamax.com. I am just sharing this article just to give you some information about the latest Swine Flu Virus that hit the whole world now. Keep reading and be informed! Happy Thursday

Swine flu not linked with today's pigs

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (UPI) -- A Purdue University veterinarian says flu viruses are named for the first animal in which they are found; the current swine flu was discovered in pigs in 1930.

That discovery is the only reason the current outbreak is called swine flu, said Purdue swine medicine expert Sandy Amass. "We don't even know if the virus found in humans will infect pigs."

No U.S. pigs have been found with swine flu (H1N1) in the current outbreak -- only humans -- but Amass says pork producers should take precautionary measures to protect their herds from being infected with any flu virus:

-- Do not permit people, including employees that have the flu or flu-like symptoms, in or around barns.

-- Do not allow any visitors to the farm, especially international visitors who have had contact with other livestock.

-- If pigs show flu symptoms -- coughing, runny nose, fever and a reduction in feed intake -- call a veterinarian and have them tested.

"It's important to make sure your biosecurity procedures are being followed," Amass said. "If you have any concern, work with your vet because they know your operation best."

Energy-catching wings installed on ISS

HOUSTON (UPI) -- The crew of the shuttle Discovery Friday installed solar wings that can double the electricity available on the International Space Station, NASA said.

When extended, the array measures 240 feet tip to tip and adds 9,600 square feet to the station's solar arrays, the U.S. space agency said.

The installation was delayed after a small "ripple" in one of the arrays was discovered, but Mission Control in Houston said it wasn't an issue and that it flattened out naturally when the array was extended.
The solar wings can double the electric power available for scientific experiments conducted aboard the orbiting space station.

Ancient 70-foot rise in sea level found
Copyright 2009 by United Press International

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. scientists say they have found proof that Earth's sea level was more than 70 feet (21 meters) higher 400,000 years ago than it is now.

Storrs Olson, a zoologist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, and geologist Paul Hearty of the Bald Head Island Conservancy said they discovered sedimentary and fossil evidence in the walls of a limestone quarry in Bermuda that documents the rise in sea level during an interglacial period of the Middle Pleistocene.

Although Hearty and colleagues published preliminary evidence of the sea-level rise nearly a decade ago, they said the new fossil find provides unequivocal evidence of the timing and extent of the event.

The scientists said such a rise in sea level would have ramifications well beyond geology and climate modeling.

"These findings are incredibly important and have major relevance because of their potential predictive value since this sea-level rise took place during the interglacial period most similar to the present one now in progress," Olaon said. "It thus becomes essential that the full extent and duration of this event be more widely recognized and acknowledged."

The findings are reported in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews.

Orbital, SpaceX to resupply space station

HOUSTON (UPI) -- Orbital Sciences of Dulles, Va., and SpaceX of Hawthorne, Calif., have been tapped to resupply the International Space Station when the space shuttle retires.

The two relatively small companies beat out industry giants Boeing and Lockheed Martin to win the $3.5 billion contract Tuesday, NASA said.

Orbital and SpaceX are to share unmanned cargo duties from 2010, when the shuttle fleet retires, until a new U.S. spacecraft is built, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Russian rockets will ferry U.S. astronauts to and from the Space Station during that time, the Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday.

"It is a way of taking American taxpayers' dollars to pay an American company to take American payloads to the space station so we're not entirely dependent on the kindness of the Russians," said John Pike, a space expert at Global Security.org, a Washington think tank.

Hubble finds CO2 on extrasolar planet
Copyright 2008 by United Press International
arcamax.com

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The U.S. space agency says its Hubble Space Telescope has discovered carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting another star.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said the discovery is an important step toward finding chemical biotracers of extraterrestrial life.

Although the extrasolar, Jupiter-sized planet called HD 189733b is too hot for life, NASA said the Hubble observations are a proof-of-concept demonstration that the basic chemistry for life can be measured on planets orbiting other stars. NASA scientists also said organic compounds also can be a byproduct of life processes and their detection on an Earthlike planet someday might provide the first evidence of life beyond our planet.

"Hubble was conceived primarily for observations of the distant universe, yet it is opening a new era of astrophysics and comparative planetary science," said Eric Smith, NASA's Hubble program scientist. "These atmospheric studies will begin to determine the compositions and chemical processes operating on distant worlds orbiting other stars. The future for this newly opened frontier of science is extremely promising as we expect to discover many more molecules in exoplanet atmospheres."

Iceberg computer program is created

This is quite interesting news!! here it is!!

Iceberg computer program is created

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (UPI) -- U.S. scientists say they've created a computer program to help predict when icebergs will calve from ice sheets.

"The models we have do not currently have any way to figure out where the big ice sheets end and where the ice calves off to form icebergs," said Penn State Professor Richard Alley.

The problem, he said, is the great variability involved in iceberg calving. One important variable -- the one that accounts for the largest portion of when the iceberg breaks -- is the rate at which ice shelves spread. When ice shelves spread, they crack because of the stresses of spreading. If they spread slowly, the cracks don't propagate through the entire shelf and the shelf remains intact, he said. If the shelf spreads rapidly, the cracks propagate through the shelf, thereby causing calving.

"Spreading explains most of what is observed on the ice sheet," said Alley. "However, the equations come out a little better if we include a few other things."

The researcher determined the basic equation for ice calving is the rate of spreading, times the width of the shelf, times the thickness, times a constant. The researchers said that equation doesn't capture the totality of variation in the ice calving process, but it does account for a large percentage of the variability.

The study appeared in the Nov. 28 issue of the journal Science.

Oldest known nuclear family was killed
Copyright 2008 by United Press International

ADELAIDE, Austria (UPI) -- The oldest known nuclear family was killed in a violent struggle, an analysis of the 4,600-year-old remains buried in Germany indicate.

In fact, the oldest genetically identifiable family "were definitely murdered, there are big holes in their heads, fingers and wrists are broken," Alistair Pike from Bristol University told the BBC.

The researchers, whose report was published in the PNAS scientific journal, said comparisons of DNA extracted from bones found in one grave confirmed it entombed a mother, father and their two children. The son and daughter were buried in the arms of their parents.

"We're really sure, based on hard biological facts not just supposing or assuming," said Wolfgang Haak of The Australian Center for Ancient DNA in Adelaide, conducted the DNA analysis.

The four graves held 13 bodies, eight children and five adults. In two graves, DNA was preserved enough to allow comparisons among the occupants, researchers said.

One of the graves contained the nuclear family, while the other grave contained three related children and an unrelated woman, the British broadcaster said.
