Clint Eastwood was 41 years old when he debuted in the role of maverick Det. "Dirty" Harry Calahan in the action film Dirty Harry (1971). Reportedly, the part had been turned down by Paul Newman, John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and Frank Sinatra. Eastwood insisted on performing his own action stunts, including the famous scene where he jumped from a bridge to the roof of a moving school bus.

A species of sponge, called the red sponge, can be pushed through a piece of fabric so that it is broken into thousands of tiny pieces. The animal does not die. Rather, all the pieces reassemble until the sponge returns to its original form.

Martha Washington was referred to as "Lady Washington." Mary Todd Lincoln was the first presidential wife to be referred to as "The First Lady."

How dangerous are a hedgehog's quills?

How did Velcro come about?

In the early 1940s, Swiss inventor George de Mestral went on a walk with his dog. Upon returning home, he noticed that his dog's coat and his pants were covered with cockleburrs. His inventor's curiosity led him to study the burrs under a microscope, where he discovered its natural hook-like shape. This was to become the basis for a unique, two-sided fastener: one side with stiff "hooks" like the burrs and the other side with the soft "loops" like the fabric of his pants. The result was VELCRO® brand hook and loop fasteners, named for the French words "velour" and "crochet."

Who came up with Beatlemania?

Sandy Gardiner, an Ottawa, Ontario journalist, coined the phrase ‘Beatlemania’ to describe the frenzy created by the 1960s British rock group. He came up with the term while covering The Beatles during a trip to Liverpool in the Fab Four’s early days.

What does the TGV connect?

The TGV is France's train a grande vitesse; literally "high-speed train." It connects cities in France and in some other neighbouring countries, such as Belgium, Italy and Switzerland with the network centred on Paris.

TGVs under other brand names connect France with Germany and the Netherlands (Thalys) and the United Kingdom (Eurostar). Trains derived from TGV design also operate in South Korea (KTX), and Spain (AVE).

How highly awarded can a Ukranian be?

Did the title of the Smashing Pumpkins third album have any special significance?

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the third album by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. Band leader Billy Corgan described the album's title as "just another one of those pretentious Pumpkin album titles continuing the long line of pretension." When asked about other possible album titles that were considered, the band joked, Sad and Sadder, The Phoenix Meets the Dwarf, Basketball Land, and Baseball City.

How devastating was Hurricane Rita?

Hurricane Rita was the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the most intense tropical cyclone ever observed in the Gulf of Mexico. Rita caused $11.3 billion in damage on the U.S. Gulf Coast in September 2005.

Rita made landfall on September 24 between Texas and Louisiana, as a Category 3 hurricane before continuing on through parts of southeast Texas. The storm surge caused extensive damage along the Louisiana and extreme southeastern Texas coasts and completely destroyed some coastal communities. The storm killed seven people directly; many others died in evacuations and from indirect effects.

How did Kitty Hawk get its name?

North Carolina is the home of the Wright Brothers' National Monument and Visitor Center, near Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills. The center contains a recently refurbished replica of the original Wright Flyer as well as other "First Flight" memorabilia. The center commemorates one of America's historic moments. A nearby sand dune supports the Memorial Pylon.

On the grounds, there are historical markers and a reconstructed hanger and shop. Called Chickahauk by native Indians, some believe "Kitty Hawk" is the closest English pronunciation of the Indian phrase meaning "goose hunting grounds". Once a remote area, Kitty Hawk has grown into a summer resort area and provides some of the best beach recreation on the North Carolina coast.

This population gained a foothold niche in the Silver River State Park as a result of being released by a tour boat operator known locally as "Colonel Tooey" to enhance his "Jungle Cruise" ride some time around the Spring of 1938. A traditional story that the monkeys were released for scenery enhancement in the Tarzan movies that were filmed at that location is false, as the only Tarzan movie filmed in the area, 1939's Tarzan Finds a Son! contains no Rhesus Macaques.
